MUMBAI: The Bombay HC on Wednesday sought an affidavit from the Customs department to explain why its provisional assessment of VW group’s imports were not finalised within six months as mandated by law. Skoda Auto Volkswagen India has challenged a Sept 2024 Customs show cause notice over Rs 12,000-crore ‘unpaid’ duty. Senior counsel for VW group Arvind Datar said all required documents were furnished till 2016 and beyond. But the Customs enquired in 2023-24, seeking documents from 2009, he said. Additional solicitor general N Venkataraman for Customs said the reply will be filed by March 10. HC will decide only the issue of limitation at this stage.
